Abstract

An insight into the background of processes for С4 — С7 paraffin hydrocarbons isomerization is provided, from the first commercial introduction up to now.  Attention is drawn to changing requirements for technologies and catalysts in response to the new industrial and environmental demands.  Benchmarking, efficiency evaluation, operating reliability and risk assessment for different pentane-hexane cut isomerization technologies, as well as for n-butane isomerization process are presented. Application features of the various isomerization catalysts (chlorinated isomerization catalysts, catalysts based on sulfated metal oxides, and zeolite isomerization catalysts) are considered. Process diagrams of the most widespread commercial isomerization processes are presented. Operating experience is shown.

The environmental risks and the scope of waste generation when using chlorinated catalysts are considered; modern solutions to abandon the injection of chlorinating reagents and completely eliminate the waste generation for grassroot and operating plants are shown.

The latest trends in the development of isomerization process are presented. The solutions that reduce operating and capital costs for grassroot and operating facilities and eliminate production wastes and the associated environmental risks are among the new trends. New development trends for industrial processes are presented — С7 cut isomerization technology and technologies for production of individual paraffin hydrocarbons.
